Surface Runoff and Drainage Analyses

As a member of the water resources consulting team, engineering services provided a hydrology and drainage analyses for two subdivisions located within the City of Rifle, Colorado. The proposed developments will increase the amount of imperious area and consequently, cause an increase in peak runoff conditions to downstream property owners. As such, hydrology analyses were performed in order to determine the impact the proposed developments would have on the historic runoff conditions. The peak runoff flows for the analyses were determined using the methodology given in the Soil Conservation Service's "Technical Release No. 55, Urban Hydrology for Small Watersheds."

Detention volumes were estimated using the Autocad Hydrology Pond Sizing package. The required detention volume is based on the volume needed to lower the peak runoff under developed conditions to match the peak runoff under the existing conditions of the site. The outlet works for the detention ponds involved the use of "Smart Boxes" with the diameter of the orifice plate designed such that the releases matched the historic peak flows.
